[videolib] Captions harvesting options?

Greetings everyone,

I have a faculty member interested in conducting an analysis of the scripts for a popular television series of local significance. It doesn't seem like the scripts are available but there are closed captions. I believe there are copyright and ethical issues involved (although transformative fair use?) but I promised I'd ask - does anyone know if there is a program that can somehow harvest just the closed captions from a DVD and export into a text searchable document?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Sincerely,
-lisa H.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

From watching a lot of television with an elderly person with closed captions on--a lot of closed captions do not actually contain all the dialog. They frequently leave out words and phrases-so it definitely would not be an accurate reflection of the script or performances.

Does it say in the credits who does the captioning? If so, you might be
able to get the caption files from them. Never hurts to ask.
