Good afternoon! I am seeking additional speakers for a panel about
intellectual property and moving image media at the 2019 Visual Resources
Association conference in Los Angeles March 26-29. The panel will consist
of several 10-15 minute presentations. Participants will receive a free
day’s registration for the conference.

Most members of the VRA deal primarily with still images of artworks.
However, our members often find themselves taking on responsibility for
supporting the educational use of film in physical and online classrooms,
educating students about fair use in their own filmmaking, clearing rights
for films created by their institutions, or managing IP issues related to
films in a collection owned by their institution.

We would love to include one or more LA-based presenters from the videolib
community on the panel who can speak to the rights challenges raised by
layered, collective works that bring together multiple kinds of
intellectual property. How do commercial studios clear all the rights
hurdles necessary to bring new works to the public, and how do they manage
the rights for these new creations? How do film archives evaluate the
copyright status of works that come into their collection, and how do they
balance the interests of rights holders with their mission to preserve and
provide access to these materials? How can visual resource professionals
who facilitate the pedagogical use of motion pictures in teaching and
student work traverse these tricky waters and evaluate when they can assert
fair use with confidence? These are the kinds of topics we would like to
address in the session.

If you are interested in participating, or have a speaker you would like to
suggest, please send me an email at ***@menil.org by December 12th. All
ideas are welcome.

Best wishes,

Margaret

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
