Hi all,
I have a question about the best way to locate Nielsen Ratings for
broadcast television programs.

A faculty member in our Media Arts department has asked students to include
Nielsen Ratings for various television programs in a classroom assignment.
From what I can tell, none of our library's databases have comprehensive
(or close) date coverage for Nielsen Ratings. It also appears that
different publications elected to publish different levels of detail. Some
publications list only top 10 or top 20 Nielsen rated programs rather than
ratings for all broadcast programs. I have been able to cobble together
instructions for most of the students using resources like the
Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive, USA Today, and Newspaper Archive.
However, a recent reference question involving a 2005-2007 program was much
more challenging and I have had to give some fairly unsatisfactory guidance.

Does anyone know of a database or other electronic resource that provides
more comprehensive access to this data?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Best,

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Hi Laura. We don't subscribe to any of the Nielsen reports either, so I
cobble together ratings information through several different sources.
Broadcasting & Cable (formerly Broadcasting) is a trade industry
publication that has reported ratings since the early days of television.
We get it full text through the Communication & Mass Media Complete
database, which also provides full-text access to Advertising Age, another
source for ratings reporting. I also use the International Television (&
Video) Almanac, an annual yearbook that covers 1956-current. Another good
source for historic ratings is the TV Guide Almanac (Ballantine 1980), one
of those pre-Internet popular reference sources for all things television.

I hope this helps!

My understanding (I am happy to be corrected on this!) is that the actual Nielsen ratings reports are primarily intended as a service to the broadcasters and cable channels, and thus are very expensive and not a realistic option for libraries. At least that is what I heard when I investigated it a while back.

I suspect that what Elizabeth Peterson mentions – gleaning information from various sources – is the best option given the circumstances.

Best,
James

Didn’t the International Television (& Video) Almanac cease in 2014? Or am I thinking of something else
