[videolib] ASP videos in Chrome/Safari

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else has run into the problem of Alexander
Street Press embedded videos not playing in Chrome or Safari browsers
(works in Firefox). This began last summer and dozens of emails and a
video chat still haven't resolved the issue. In Chrome the embedded
video yields "Error loading player: No playable sources found". In
Safari "Request URI is too long". It's frustrating because last year,
this wasn't a problem. And the ASP/ProQuest tech support has been
ineffective and inconsistent is their response.

Thanks,

Jim Holmes

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Hi Jim,

I don’t think I can be much help, but I feel your pain. I had a bunch of trouble with the heavy DRM content (the Sony Picture Classics esp) playing. This was about a year ago and I am not sure it was ever resolved. I also had a bunch of screenshots at the time. I worked with the tech help for several months to try to reach a solution. I finally came up with this, which I posted on the libguide I maintain (and honestly not sure it’s still accurate so ASP if you’re listening it would be awesome to have a faq page with supported browsers/devices):

Browser requirements for Alexander Street Press:
It is recommended that viewers use the most recent versions of the major browsers (with exception noted):
Windows (7, 8.x, 10): IE10+, Edge, Firefox 52+, Chrome 50+ --- EXCEPTION issue with Win 7 and IE 11
Mac OS X: Safari 9+, Firefox 52+, Chrome 50+ --- EXCEPTION: DRM content on Safari does not work

Mobile devices (phones, tablets) are not recommended for viewing. For mobile devices, ASP has not tested device/OS/browser combinations to develop a discreet list, but we know there is an issue with iPhone and Safari/Chrome. iPad may not work either. DRM content with Safari is not supported.

Thanks Sarah,

Yeah - I've got similar things posted to various CMS pages with embedded
video. As I'm sure you know, it's not what the faculty and students
want to hear and I'm being continually pressured to put things on our
own media server, which plays on all devices and platforms without a
problem (currently - knock on wood). On the plus side, we've been able
to get most of the other vendors streaming platforms to work across OS,
browsers, and mobile devices, which is a vast improvement from where we
were a couple years ago. Hopefully this will all seem like distant
growing pains in the utopian streaming video future.
