[videolib] Advice needed for Copyright Leadership Certificate from Copyrightlaws.com

Hi everyone!
First time posting after a few months of gleaning much helpful information
about videos and copyright! I know that there are several copyright and law
experts here so I thought I'd ask about a copyright program. Please let me
know if my question is badly off-topic.

I'm considering asking my dean to sponsor three classes through Copyright
Leadership Certificate <http://Kindly, Katrina Smith Media Librarian Santa
Rosa Junior College 707 521 7927> for professional development. It's a big
ask for an adjunct and I would so appreciate any thoughts or experiences
folks have had for this type of online course.

Copyright experts: does this program/presenter look credible to you?
Is this type of course look like it could be specialized enough for my
media licensing, Section 108 needs? And possibly broadening to larger
copyright/fair use needs of the faculty/staff and students?

Off list responses ok.

Kindly,
Katrina Smith

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Hi Katrina
I am not sure if I am reading your question correctly, but should your college want to go ahead with it, and I personally think such coursework is perfect in today’s climate, we offer a film that was originally broadcast on PBS Independent Lens that can serve the students quite well. It is entitled COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS and you can read about it, watch the trailer, etc. on our site at https://soundviewmediapartners.com/copyright-criminals/.

Should you have any questions, just drop me a note.

Dear Katrina,

If I were you I would do CopyrightX first. It will give you a solid grounding in the law, it is a fantastic course and they are currently accepting applications for the spring 2019 course (12 weeks). I know several of us on this list have completed the CopyrightX course and I can only say good things about it.

http://copyx.org/

Also it’s free. ☺

HTH,

Sarah

Hi Katrina,

I definite echo Sarah's recommendation to look into CopyrightX: I completed
the course a few years ago, and it was probably the single most enjoyable
and useful class I've ever taken! Two other professional development
opportunities to look into which may be cheaper than the one you asked
about are the Coursera MOOCs Copyright for Educators and Librarians
<https://www.coursera.org/learn/copyright-for-education> and Copyright for
Multimedia <https://www.coursera.org/learn/copyright-for-multimedia> by
Kevin Smith, Anne Gilliland, and Lisa Macklin, all noted experts in the
field. They are both great introductions to the topics in their titles
which we have incorporated into our copyright education efforts at the
University of Maryland. To return to your original question: I'm not
familiar with the program or presenters myself, but everything freely
available on the site looks legitimate! I don't see anything as closely
tailored to the needs you describe as the Copyright for Multimedia MOOC I
link to above, though.

A big thank you for posting replies to my question about copyright
courses. My administration was thrilled that there was an excellent (free)
option with excellent presenters.
It was a big relief to me professionally.
