VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Sad yes, but the criterion collection is available for free on Kanopy if you have a library card. Why would anyone pay $11 a month when it’s available for free with a library card? Makes no sense.

The Criterion Collection has allowed Kanopy to stream 50 titles on a
limited number of public libraries. Educational libraries have up to
400. There are no plans to make any further titles available.

So it's hardly comparable to a streaming service that has original
content, extras and thousands of titles from a wide array of
distributors.

Ben,

That’s good to know that academic libraries have 400 of the Criterion titles. I’m trying to find the silver lining in this cloud because I love classic film and I’m hoping that as an alum of my local university I will have full access to the collection now that Film Struck has been struck. I’ll have to check though because I haven’t asked yet.

Fingers crossed.

Best,

Elizabeth

There is no silver lining in the cloud, as Filmstruck was much more than
the Criterion collection (as wonderful as that is). Criterion/TCM were
dedicated to bringing in all sorts of films in a first class fashion and
were licensing far better money than the educational platforms are paying.
That and they were providing context, curation and produced some wonderful
short films.

And of course, a lot of public libraries do not have Kanopy. Having lived
in a small town in Ohio, I know what Filmstruck would mean today to those
who don't have a New York Public Library card.

Just to clarify my earlier email:

This isn't to knock Kanopy's mission - we are looking forward to
growing that relationship and the Criterion presence on Kanopy

We’ve worked closely with them to bring 50 films to the public library
space. While there are no plans at the moment to increase that number,
we continue to talk to them about the library market.

But, and Elizabeth you should look for this, in the educational space,
we have been talking to them for a long time about adding more titles
- nothing to do with the FilmStruck announcement. Kanopy does a great
job representing the Criterion brand, though it’s not a replacement
for The Criterion Channel and its original offerings. We see them as
very complimentary.
There is no silver lining in the cloud, as Filmstruck was much more than the Criterion collection (as wonderful as that is). Criterion/TCM were dedicated to bringing in all sorts of films in a first class fashion and were licensing far better money than the educational platforms are paying. That and they were providing context, curation and produced some wonderful short films.

Sad yes, but the criterion collection is available for free on Kanopy if you have a library card. Why would anyone pay $11 a month when it’s available for free with a library card? Makes no sense.

Not to beat a dead horse, but just to further illustrate how tenuous and
complicated database access to information (whether it's a film or an
article) can be -- as an alum, you are not likely to have access to
databases to which your alma mater's library subscribes.  I am not an
expert on database subscription terms, but I believe it is very rare for
vendors to offer alumni access at anything approaching a reasonable
price point.  You may have access by visiting your local university's
library and using their computers to view them onsite, but access at a
distance is typically limited to current students and staff for most
contracts.

No sure why you focus on alum access. I think it shows how tenious and

want to own physical copies of films as well as when available permanant
online access .

Because Elizabeth said in the message immediately preceding: "I’m trying
to find the silver lining in this cloud because I love classic film and
I’m hoping that as an alum of my local university I will have full
access to the collection now that Film Struck has been struck."  I
hadn't seen that aspect addressed in the many responses yet.

I think many (if not most) libraries are absolutely committed to having
physical copies of films on hand for use.  (I know mine is, due to my
insistence.)  But.  With more and more calls to support distance ed,
more and more academic librarians' time is going towards chasing down
the tenuous and fickle online streams.  We have to keep our eyes on
multiple landscapes at once, and make sure no one takes online access
for granted while advocating for long-term sustainability in an
environment that does not grasp the complexities we face on a daily
basis.  Assumed alumni access for databases is just a tiny sliver of that.

Best,

I love the Criterion Collection so I hope they offer everything going forward on Kanopy even though I’d be hard pressed to find fifty plus hours to rewatch everything. It would have to be a very long cold winter.

Sad yes, but the criterion collection is available for free on Kanopy if you have a library card. Why would anyone pay $11 a month when it’s available for free with a library card? Makes no sense.
