Hi All,
I'm looking for some guidance on this one. I think I already know the answer, but I wanted to reach out to the experts on this list first. We have removed the film The Social Life of Urban Small Spaces in VHS format from our collection. A number of our faculty have inquired about a streaming version that they can access for instruction. They have said that they used to be able to find it on the web, but aren't able to anymore. We have the ability to convert the VHS to digital and host it on our media server, however, the film is available for purchase in DVD format on this website: http://www.directcinema.com/category/215/452 making that a copyright issue (right?). The wrench is that the DVD (which I think the faculty could live with) is not Closed Captioned. Our campus policy is that any media used in instruction must be captioned. We have the ability to caption in digital format through our media server, but that would be back where we started. Ideally, I'd like to jump from VHS to digital and have it closed captioned, but want to make sure that's on the up and up.
Thanks in advance for any assistance! Please feel free to respond off thread.
Lisa

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Hi Lisa,

I licensed streaming rights for this title from Direct Cinema. Your best
option would be to contact them for rights and then caption the film on
your local server.

Hope this helps,

The obvious question would be: Are there students in the class who would
need the closed-captioning?

If not, could your administration make an exception to the policy?
