VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Just got back from AMIA and several organizations were doing demos with the
AVT-8710
<https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/276891-REG/AV_Toolbox_AVT_8710_AVT_8710_Multi_Standard_Time_Base.html>,
which was working nicely for digitizing analog videotape. Unfortunately
these little units have gotten harder to come by recently, however it seems
like a good thing to keep an eye out for on eBay.

I've also had experience using a rack-mounted FOR.A FA-400 that was pulled
from a production environment and worked great, but definitely a larger
piece of equipment and may be a bit more expensive.

All best,

Hi all,

Yes, that AVT-8710 seems to have been a recommended tool but is unfortunately discontinued. There doesn’t seem to be a similar replacement on the market that I’m aware of.

If there’s some other workaround, please share. And thanks to all who have shared so far!

Laura,

I found a used AVT-8120 on eBay for ~$70 that I hope to test out next week.
This particular model is a signal splitter w/ TBC, and I am happy to report
back the results once the unit comes in and we can test. Lots of folks from
the video art and archival worlds all seem to be dealing with similar TBC
issues in accessing or transferring analog tape media, and as far as I know
there is not a workaround that doesn't involve finding either a stand-alone
TBC unit or running the signal through a mixer, splitter, or some other
device that will perform the same functionality. This may be a stretch but
if you have a video mixer at your institution (such as a Videonics MX-1),
these can sometimes be used to output a corrected signal. I've seen this
work to varying degrees of success, but may be worth checking out if you
have the equipment.
