Hello,

Many of you are aware that Kanopy titles are listed in WorldCat.

Do you know if all other vendors plan to do the same, and list their streaming titles in WorldCat?

Best,
Monique

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

That's kind of weird. What happens if a title is removed and is no longer
available would it still show up in Worldcat?

Good point, Jessica. I'm quite sure they are not at all concerned about
that issue. They don't tell libraries with current licenses or open pda
programs when they drop titles, and it can happen mid-semester-- they just
disappear. I've heard reports of this from a few librarians.

Hi all,

This might be a good question for an OLAC-er to explain too. My understanding is that some libraries add their streaming holdings to WorldCat. As an end-user researching who-has-it-streaming, I have found this information helpful when in WorldCat. It is also helpful when end-users could possibly go to another nearby library and access a leased item – be it a film or a journal – on a public terminal. Lastly, if one has access to multiple libraries – for example, a public library card or two and a university library – then a quick search in Worldcat might show who has access to a particular streaming collection. For example, I’m super lucky to have access to Brookline and Boston public libraries, and a wide range of academic libraries nearby.

I have also found that there’s a matter of collection management preferencese in whether or not to have full title holdings listed on WorldCat. Having run and analyzed reports comparing WorldCat and local holdings for various projects, including the BLC at Risk Media Project<https://blc.org/special-highlights/blc-risk-media-project>, I find that there is some advantage to seeing all holdings on WorldCat. Then again, if a streaming film is leased and not owned, others might argue that it they don’t want this to be listed in WorldCat.

Lots to think about.

As far as I understand, the vendor loads the records to the OCLC knowledge base so they are ready for the library to grab.

Another option is for the library to get the records directly from the vendor (this is what we do with FilmPlatform).

To answer the original question – yes, other vendors have records on OCLC, such as Swank, FilmPlatform, and Digitalia.

Subject: Re: [videolib] WorldCat Holdings

Having run and analyzed reports comparing WorldCat and local holdings for various projects, including the BLC at Risk Media Project <https://blc.org/special-highlights/blc-risk-media-project> , I find that there is some advantage to seeing all holdings on WorldCat. Then again, if a streaming film is leased and not owned, others might argue that it they don’t want this to be listed in WorldCat.

Lots to think about.

Good point, Jessica. I'm quite sure they are not at all concerned about that issue. They don't tell libraries with current licenses or open pda programs when they drop titles, and it can happen mid-semester-- they just disappear. I've heard reports of this from a few librarians.

I did inquire about the situation with titles being dropped mid-semester earlier in the year, since most vendors do this twice a year and notify us in advance.

I was told Kanopy used to have a twice per year film removal process (and that would be their preference too) but that 1) they are working with some pretty big name publishers now (not just educational publishers) that have more robust expectations for timing of removals and 2) they need to manage legal risks of providing films at times where the rights are no longer valid.

I do understand this but it is certainly frustrating to have a title drop out unexpectedly.

Losing /changing rights has been with media forever. In most cases rights
holders SHOULD know well in advance but with so much consolidation I am
sure there are communications issues. Also some companies may realistically
feel they can extend or renew a contract but then can't.

Another related issue thing that may of you know I have been concerned
about for a long time is the selling of "lifetime" or "perpetual" rights. I
expect with non theatrical /educational films it is probably likely that
distributors /streamers can and do acquire these rights routinely now but
for feature films not so much. Pretty much all contracts on what I would
call "feature" films and "commercial" type tv broadcast comes with limited
time terms so neither the distributor nor the people they license to has
the right to sell perpetual streaming ( in theory most studios could but
won't). I know of many cases where the rights on feature films changed
hands and the current rights holder is none to happy when they find out
films were sold with "lifetime" rights. Realistically the odds of them
finding out where they were sold and "asking" for them back in minuscule
but I would certainly be discreet on listing anything on line for
streaming.
