Greetings everyone,

Did this come out over the listserv last month and I missed it? Sharing just in case this announcement really didn't make it to this list.

Come to find out (via Facebook ads and Twitter), the Goethe Institut is making a 48 titles freely available via Kanopy. Here's the press release from Goethe Institut: https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/kul/mov/ies.html

And the Twitter announcement from Kanopy: https://twitter.com/Kanopy/status/1051895490093178881.

In the comments of the Twitter announcement, Kanopy folks explain how to access. When you click on a title from the Goethe collection you get asked which institution you're with. Rather than selecting your own, search for and select Goethe Institut and then log in with your personalized account that you created through your institution.

Did any librarians get this announcement from Kanopy through any traditional channels? I find it curious that I can't find this in my inbox, particularly as I've paid for licenses a couple titles included in this collection since this announcement.

Best,
-lisa H.

I'm of both minds.  On the one hand, yes, it offers a unique opportunity
to promote a specific part of the collection to those interested -- I
had several faculty members who were excited to hear the news, and I
encouraged them to do any previewing they might like to do during that
short 'free access' window.  On the other, as James mentioned, it's
confusing enough to try and describe how PDA works to a user -- so, it's
'free' to them for a month...  And still free after (even though the
library pays for it, depending on how many times it's accessed)?  It's a
tricky line, practically speaking -- how much do you try and educate
your users about how costs are incurred, and is that really something
they should be concerned with?  For instance, most Interlibrary Loan
departments don't communicate how costly the service is to their users
(and there are so many variables) -- I know from at least one
conversation with a colleague that part of the thinking is that the most
conscientious users will hedge their requests / access and even 'do
without', while others (perhaps those who use the service excessively)
aren't going to care anyway and will continue to run up expenditures.
It seems like there's little that really works as far as messaging goes
in between 'here's this resource we've arranged for you to have access
to' and 'well, we can't afford it anymore'.  Would love to hear
otherwise from folks who've been able to successfully communicate to
their users on a large scale about these complex arrangements.

Hi all,
Just wanted to pipe in on this.
I’m on the Kanopy email along with our Acquisitions librarian; and
I was aware of this offer.
I PRd it like mad on campus, but FAILED to inform all of you!
(Figuring everyone knew).
Just wanted you all to know that they did promote it to libraries.
Thanks,
lorraine

Greetings everyone,
Did this come out over the listserv last month and I missed it?
Sharing just in case this announcement really didn’t make it to this list.
Come to find out (via Facebook ads and Twitter), the Goethe
Institut is making a 48 titles freely available via Kanopy. Here’s
https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/kul/mov/ies.html
<https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/kul/mov/ies.html>
https://twitter.com/Kanopy/status/1051895490093178881.
In the comments of the Twitter announcement, Kanopy folks explain
how to access. When you click on a title from the Goethe
collection you get asked which institution you’re with. Rather
than selecting your own, search for and select Goethe Institut and
then log in with your personalized account that you created
through your institution.
Did any librarians get this announcement from Kanopy through any
traditional channels? I find it curious that I can’t find this in
my inbox, particularly as I’ve paid for licenses a couple titles
included in this collection since this announcement.
Best,

Yes, just read that. But I tried to watch Victoria as a “Goethe Institut user” and it works just fine!

Either they have extended it, or maybe someone forgot to turn it off :)

Greetings everyone,

Did this come out over the listserv last month and I missed it? Sharing just in case this announcement really didn’t make it to this list.

Come to find out (via Facebook ads and Twitter), the Goethe Institut is making a 48 titles freely available via Kanopy. Here’s the press release from Goethe Institut: https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/kul/mov/ies.html

And the Twitter announcement from Kanopy: https://twitter.com/Kanopy/status/1051895490093178881.

In the comments of the Twitter announcement, Kanopy folks explain how to access. When you click on a title from the Goethe collection you get asked which institution you’re with. Rather than selecting your own, search for and select Goethe Institut and then log in with your personalized account that you created through your institution.

Did any librarians get this announcement from Kanopy through any traditional channels? I find it curious that I can’t find this in my inbox, particularly as I’ve paid for licenses a couple titles included in this collection since this announcement.

Best,

-lisa H.

Hi everyone,

Kanopy and the Goethe-Institut partnered together to offer a specially
curated collection of German films to support Wunderbar: A Celebration of
German Film. During the month of October we offered complimentary access to
the collection of 48 films to academic and public libraries participating
in Kanopy's use driven programs.

We also created a Goethe platform in order to make this content available
to people who did not already have access to Kanopy through their library.
Goethe-Institut covered the licensing and access fees for the month of
October and they continue to support access through the Goethe platform for
a limited time.

We look forward to offering more partnerships like this in 2019. Feel free
to send through feedback for future partnerships.

Happy Holidays,

Shannon
