For those working with file conversion –

Is Handbrake your go-to video converter or is there something else you like better?

Any suggestions - free and not-free – are appreciated. I have had good experiences with Handbrake in the past.

Regards,
Laura

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.

Got this from our Digitization unit manager:

“We use Handbrake and are happy with the output but I’m curious to hear what others have to say and what they’re using as alternatives

I've never used Handbrake. When any of our staff or patrons are in need of
file conversion software (for a limited number of files) we use
www.zamzar.com.

Hope this helps

I've used Handbrake to migrate material from optical media, mostly, but
once I'm working with just files I almost always default to FFmpeg. It can
be a bit of a steep learning curve if you're unfamiliar with the
command-line, but you really do get the most powerful, scalable set of
tools and options using the framework. ffimprovisr
<https://amiaopensource.github.io/ffmprovisr/> is a great resource for
getting off the ground.
